How to Plan a Vegetable Garden with Peter Atkins and Associates

BUILDING EDIBLE GARDENS

We Design, Build, Plant and Maintain Vegetable and Herb Gardens for our customer. We began with providing assistance to people who would like to grow healthy food in their yard, porch, patio, eatery, balcony, or rooftop. That goal has evolved to encompass each property as a whole by building out the landscapes around them into a harmonious ecosystem as much as possible. We want to make your property become more conducive to healthy living.

Gardens are created based on the size of the family and specifically which vegetable and herbs one wishes to have. Some Vegetable need space to grow such as Tomatoes while other crops like Sweet Pepers need less growing space. We together will decide what plants you wish to have and then we will create a function and productive garden for your culinary requirements.

Family Time with a Edible Vegetable and Herb Garden

If you’d love to gain some low-stress family time, fresh air and outdoor exercise  along with fresh, tasty food – consider growing a family veggie garden.

My vegetable garden is my haven. After a strenuous week’s work in New York City, I head for my garden at my home in the suburbs. The simple, methodical pleasures of planting, picking, and hoeing are the perfect balm to my city-worn brain. It’s peaceful and quiet here.

The design of the garden is large enough for everyone in the household. The garden is anything but but boring. There are six rectangular beds surrounded by mulched paths and enclosed in a decorative fence to match the other fences on the property. My wife and I have found plenty of opportunities to make the garden beautiful. We have roses, climbing vines, sunflowers and I brag to the buddies at the office about my heirloom tomatoes...

Gardening together can also help the whole family build teamwork skills and provide a bit of education in math, science, nature, nutrition and even art. The biggest step is getting started…so here we go!  Just Call Peter Atkins at (914) 234-0161. Peter teaches vegetable classes at our garden, we have new friends because of this opportunity.

A range of options are available to help you with planting and maintaining your garden. You can choose one-on-one coaching if you'd like to learn how to be a more successful gardener. Or, for clients who are too busy to maintain their gardens themselves, full service maintenance is available. We prepare, plant, maintain and harvest. In peak months we are in the garden weekly and other times when plants are growing two to three times a month depending on the size of the garden.

In addition to the traditional tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, zucchini, beans, peas and lettuces, Peter Atkins aim to infuse his clients' gardens with heirloom vegetables not found in retail stores. We purchase

seedlings from family business seed company in Maine which is an organic seed business.  Plants, or seeds harvested from plants that

have been grown without synthetic fertilizers or pesticides, strictly adhering to the USDA's National Organic Standards Board (NOSB) organic gardening practices are designated as Organic.

Based on years of trial and error and following the good advice of a number of local experts, we have developed a list of real superstars in the vegetable world. While we have grown a wide variety of most vegetables, there is a short list of those that have consistently thrived in the multiple gardens we plan, maintain and harvest.

Grow your family’s favorites, of course, but try something new and something fun – purple carrots, orange tomatoes! Also pick things that are ready for harvest at different times, to keep interest high and plates full; such as radishes for spring, beans in early summer, zucchini and tomatoes later on and pumpkin for season’s end.

GETTING STARTED WITH HERBS

Growing herbs isn’t difficult, even for those who have never tried it. Herb gardens take up very little space. In fact, herbs can be grown in containers or scattered amongst other plants in your flower or vegetable garden. Choosing the right herbs to grow can be as simple as taking a look at your spice rack. Just grow the ones you’ve been buying; enjoy them freshly picked rather than settling for the dried alternatives.

All you need is a small, well-drained, sunny spot to grow your own herb garden. Herbs are easy to grow, don’t require a lot of fertilizer, and actually like it when you take some cuttings for use. This encourages them to put out new growth. Once you start cooking with fresh herbs, you’ll find that they have better flavor than the dried, store-bought alternatives, and you’ll probably end up using more and more of them in your favorite recipes.

HERB HISTORY FACT

Herbs have been grown for many millennia, with some Egyptian herb gardens dating back 4,000 years. Their earliest uses were medicinal, followed by culinary, and then decorative. The same cornflower the Egyptians used (Centaurea cyanus) is grown today.

MOTHER OF ALL HERB IS?

The mother of herbs is the name of the plant Plectranthus amboinicus, also known as Cuban oregano, Indian borage, and Spanish thyme. It's a versatile herb with culinary and medicinal uses.

Uses

  • Cooking
  • The leaves can be eaten fresh or cooked, and used to flavor meat, vegetables, and bread. It can also be added to rissoles and spaghetti bolognaise.
  • Medicine
  • The leaves can be chewed to relieve sore throats and coughs, or made into a tea to treat bronchitis, asthma, coughs, and viral conditions. It can also be used to relieve indigestion, stomach cramps, convulsions, headaches, and as a liver tonic.
  • Sleep aid
  • A leaf can be added to boiling water and drunk before bed to help with sleep.

Assorted Herbs planted for use in a restaurant garden

"Herbs are one of my favorite things to grow in  my own and client designed and planted gardens. Every year, I grow lots of parsley, cilantro, thyme, rosemary, dill, basil, oregano, sage, chervil, and more. They are easy to grow but they must have lots of hot sun, good drainage and we snipped when needed but not cut to the ground to respond back. This meaning one can harvest from the same plant more than once. Herbs can also be grown in raised beds or in containers, from seed or by transplanting.  Most herbs last until the first hard frost here in New York/Connecticut". Simon and Garfunkel Song about Herbs in the Garden?

Do you remember this song by Simon and Garfunkel? “Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme”. Of course you do – it’s iconic. When that song was a hit many years ago it was known that herbs improved the flavor of food, but we now know so much more about their properties and their relationship to health.

Growing your own herbs is so rewarding and fun, even a complete beginner is assured success. Growing your own small herb garden means harvesting only the amount you require, which will Increase the nutrients in the herbs and also save you money at the supermarket! Eating herbs couldn’t be easier; they can all easily be incorporated in soups, pasta, stews, salads, dips, marinades, or smoothies. Let’s start with the first herb from the song.

Designing an Herb Garden with Peter Atkins

When planning a new herb garden there are many different approaches you can take. Herbs can be planted in a formal garden interspersed with flowers, trees and shrubs or in theme gardens. You can also just plant a patch outside your kitchen door for cooking purposes. Use whatever works best for you and your particular needs.

For gardeners that like projects or who have been gardening for some time and want a challenge, a formal garden is best. A formal Herb garden consists of a series of beds interspersed with walk ways. The beds do not have to be identical, but should be balanced and work together. In the 16th century, gardeners designed “knot” herb gardens in which the plants create intricate, geometric patterns within a square or triangle. When Peter Atkins and Associates chooses to design a knot garden, we usually choose low-growing, compact plants such as thyme, hyssop and rosemary. Avoid fast-growing invasive herbs such as those from the mint family. They’ll eventually just take over your garden.

The John Blair House Garden at Colonial Williamsburg in Virginia shows the living walls and geometric layouts common to Colonial gardens. This is the famous herb garden.

Herbs for Health and Wealth

"Herbs served many purposes. In an age when meat was the primary fare, herbs enlivened meals and provided added nutrition. The plants also brightened wardrobes. According to Laura Viancour, Colonial Williamsburg’s manager of garden programs, tansy, parsley, madder, walnut and bayberry were just a few of the many plants used to create dyes that would change last year’s frock into this year’s fashion for the frugal Colonial woman". courtesy The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation; http://www.history.org/

Fruit Tree are Available for Purchase

Poducing your own fruit tree orchard at your home can be a fun fall activity, imagine being able to pick apples off your own tree – no driving, parking or paying involved. Planting a fruit tree can provide you with bushels of apples, pears, or stone fruit such as cherries, plums, apricots and peaches for many years.

Autumn is a good time to plant fruit trees.

Here is what you will need for Peter Atkins and Associates to design and plant a fruit tree or a row of trees. They can be planted for the flowering trees beatification. They can also be planted to reap the rewards of fresh fruit.[

For success with fruit trees, select a location that provides at least eight hours of sunlight, and choose a variety that is hardy to Zone 3 or 4. Depending on the fruit, you might also need a pollinating partner tree, and the trees should be spaced at least their maximum height apart from each other. Once you’ve established that you have a good location for your fruit tree(s), the fun starts as you decide what type of fruit and the varieties you want to grow.

Apples are a popular choice for New York and Connecticut gardeners, and there are dozens of options available. In fact, some varieties have been specifically bred by the University of New York to thrive in our climate, and they even come in semi-dwarf and dwarf sizes.

Home Orchards such as these photos teach kids much about organic gardening

WHEN SELECTING AN APPLE TREE?

When selecting an apple tree, consider tree size, grow time, and yield. A standard apple tree can grow to more than 20 feet tall, takes up to eight years to bear fruit, and produces up to five bushels of apples in a year. A dwarf tree grows to a maximum of 10 feet tall, takes two to three years to bear fruit, and produces up to three bushels of apples per year (enough for most home growers). All apple trees require cross pollination with another species or crabapple within 100 feet to produce fruit.

Pears, like apples, generally require two varieties for pollination and will produce fruit in three to 10 years. Pears are less likely to be bothered by most insects and diseases, but in Minnesota they can get fire blight, which can kill the tree if not controlled immediately. Pear trees require more space than apple trees, as a standard variety can grow to 40 feet tall, while the semi-dwarf varieties grow to approximately 20 feet. There are very few hardy dwarf rootstocks available.

Some fruit trees can produce fruit within a few years if you select trees that are at least a year old. Because they bloom early in the spring, the delicate flowers of stone fruit trees can be destroyed or damaged by late frost, so it is not unusual to have a season without fruit if weather conditions don’t cooperate. Some stone fruits such as European plums and tart cherries can be grown without pollinators; this makes them attractive for smaller yards.

Having your own home orchard can be rewarding and ‘fruitful’ if you select trees that are suitable for your location.

Please reach out to Peter Atkins and Associates. We have availability to fruit trees that are one year and older. Sizes to semi mature from orchards can be purchased and planted by Peter Atkins and Associates. Call us for a site meeting (914) 234-0161
